How to Research NBA Player Props: Hit Rates, Matchups and Injuries

Every NBA prop asks one question: will this player clear this exact number tonight? A season average doesn't answer it. Below is the research routine we use in PickFinder, worked through on a real line: Jaden McDaniels' rebounds for Minnesota at New Orleans on November 6, 2026.

Start on the props board

The NBA props board lists every line posted by PrizePicks, Underdog, Sleeper and the other pick'em apps, next to the same prop at the sportsbooks and prediction markets. The screenshot below is filtered to PrizePicks' fixed payout lines (PP Fixed), which hides goblins and demons so every row is a standard pick.

A handful of columns do most of the work:

  • L5, L10, L15: how often the player went over this exact line in his last 5, 10 and 15 games.
  • Diff: his last-10 average minus the line. Positive means he has been averaging more than the number.
  • Defense: where tonight's opponent ranks against his position for this stat.
  • Moneyline: his team's chance to win, from sportsbook odds. A likely blowout means fewer minutes for starters.
  • IP: the over and under chances implied by the sportsbooks' prices on the same line.

Sort by any column, then click a row to open the player.

Read the game log against the line

Jaden McDaniels rebounds chart in PickFinder: 9 of his last 10 games over 5.5, split into offensive and defensive rebounds

McDaniels' line was 5.5 rebounds at -119 both ways on PrizePicks. He cleared it in 9 of his last 10 games (90%) and averaged 6.2. Each bar splits his offensive and defensive rebounds, and the faded bar behind it shows his rebound chances, so you can tell whether a big night came from volume.

Don't stop at the last 10. The other windows tell a calmer story: 67% over his last 15 games and 69% for the season. A 90% stretch is a hot run, not his normal. The row of apps across the top shows the same prop everywhere it's posted, and the first box is the sportsbook consensus with the vig removed (52% over here). The quarter and half buttons (1Q, 1H, 2H, 4Q) rebuild the chart for those periods when an app posts a partial-game line.

Check the matchup

Defense vs position panel: New Orleans ranks 28th against power forward rebounds, labeled Weak

The Defense tab ranks the opponent against the player's position. New Orleans allowed 6.4 rebounds a game to power forwards, 28th in the league for the season and over its last 10 and last 5 games, so PickFinder labels it Weak. It was also 24th in rebound chances allowed. The Offense vs Defense panel below compares the teams: Minnesota ranked 2nd in rebounds, New Orleans 13th on the defensive side.

A rank on its own can mislead early in the season, so look at all three columns. A defense that is 28th for the season but 5th over the last 5 games has changed something.

Check injuries, then filter by them

Injuries tab listing Donte DiVincenzo and Anthony Edwards out and Terrence Shannon questionable, each with Without, With and Stats buttons

The Injuries tab lists who is out on both teams. Minnesota was without Anthony Edwards (knee) and Donte DiVincenzo (Achilles), with Terrence Shannon questionable. Each player has a Without button that redraws the chart using only games that player missed, and a With button for the opposite.

McDaniels rebounds chart filtered to games without Anthony Edwards: last-10 hit rate falls to 60 percent

Without Edwards, McDaniels' last-10 hit rate falls from 90% to 60% and his average from 6.2 to 5.3. But check the dates: half of those games are from last March and April. This season, with Edwards out since late October, he cleared the line in 4 of 5 games (the 2026 column reads 80%). When a filter mixes seasons, read the season split before you trust the headline number.

A checklist before you pick

  1. Hit rate in every window, not only the one that looks best.
  2. The opponent's rank against the position, for the season and recently.
  3. Who is out, and the chart with and without them.
  4. The game script: moneyline, spread and total.
  5. The line at other apps. If one app sits half a point lower, that's the better number for an over.

When a pick holds up, click the star to add it to the Pick Builder, choose Over or Under, and export it to the app you play on. Our PickFinder tutorial covers the Pick Builder, Popular and Discrepancies pages, and the NBA research page lists every market we track.
